That was the question at the heart of Heels & Handshakes Las Vegas' June event at F1 Arcade, where speaker Britt Whalen, founder of La Critique, shared an honest and emotional conversation about burnout, mental health, and reclaiming your life before stress becomes something more serious.

More than just a talk, it became a room full of women opening up about challenges many professionals quietly carry—overwork, financial pressure, caregiving responsibilities, and the constant feeling that they need to "keep going."

Burnout Is No Longer the Exception

Britt opened the evening with a statistic that resonated with many in the room: according to national surveys, burnout is affecting workers across every industry and age group. The World Health Organization defines burnout as chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It often appears as:

  • Emotional exhaustion

  • Feeling disconnected or cynical about work

  • Decreased effectiveness

  • Difficulty recovering, even after rest

And as she pointed out, burnout isn't rare anymore—it's becoming the norm.

A Personal Story That Struck a Chord

In one of the evening's most vulnerable moments, Britt shared her own experience.

While managing group sales across nine restaurant venues and pursuing a master's degree while working 60-80 hour weeks, she gradually lost her joy, energy, and sense of self. Physical pain, sleep disruptions, brain fog, and eventually depression followed. What made it especially frightening was that the change happened so slowly she didn't initially recognize it.

Her story served as a reminder many women needed to hear:

Burnout doesn't happen overnight.

It builds quietly—and if ignored, it can affect every area of life.

The Four Stages of Burnout

One of the most memorable parts of the presentation was Britt's Formula One racing analogy, where she compared burnout to warning flags on a racetrack.

Level One: "It's just stress"

The early signs often include:

  • Feeling overwhelmed

  • Mild sleep disturbances

  • Increased caffeine or wine consumption

  • Difficulty switching off from work

At this stage, many people dismiss the symptoms and continue pushing forward.

Level Two: Warning signs become clear

This stage often brings:

  • Brain fog

  • Forgetfulness

  • Emotional exhaustion

  • Dreading work

  • Feeling disconnected from responsibilities

Britt emphasized that this is the point where slowing down and changing direction becomes critical.

Level Three: Your body starts speaking

As burnout intensifies, physical symptoms begin showing up:

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Frequent illness

  • Persistent pain

  • Sleep issues

  • Declining performance

These signs are the body's way of demanding a pit stop rather than allowing you to continue running on empty.

Level Four: Complete shutdown

At its most severe, burnout can lead to:

  • Depression

  • Serious health complications

  • Inability to work

  • Anxiety and emotional distress

  • The need for professional intervention

Britt encouraged anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek support and not wait until they reach a crisis point.

How Women Can Prevent Burnout Before It Takes Over

Britt stressed the importance of intentionally cultivating a positive mindset and having a vision for the life you want to create. Without direction, it's easy to become stuck in survival mode.
